Douglas Chapman opened the Lucia Douglas Gallery in Fairhaven in 1993. He bought an older home in town; remodeling it to house a modern gallery and show various local and regional artists' work. The Gallery is opened for exhibits ten months out of the year, with the usual exceptions being January and August.
The 2-story, modern building at the main entrance is awing. The polished cement floored main gallery is lit by track lighting suspended from a high open beam ceiling. Its industrial ambiance is in stark contrast to the work shown at eye level throughout the white environment. Billie Holiday croons as one wanders through enjoying the current show; while outdoors there is a sculpture garden used for both show and as a warm weather reception area. Questions are answered with a smile, and it takes a lot of looking to uncover the original home that served as the starting place for the gallery. Upstairs there is a commercial frame shop and downstairs is a private print studio. There is an abundance of free parking outside.
The last Sunday of the month the gallery features The Jazz Project playing in the main gallery. There is a modest charge at the door, or memberships are available. Nice to know you can enjoy local art, and listen to some good music in a clean, well lighted, pleasant space so close to home.
