Cinco De Mayo Restaurant
3040 Northwest Ave
In the middle of the strip mall across from Yeager’s is a small Mexican restaurant called Cinco De Mayo. Bellingham has a lot of Mexican restaurants to choose from; however Cinco De Mayo might have the best portions and service for the price of any place in town. Once you eat here, you become a loyal patron -- the staff remembers you, what you like to order, and rushes to get your food to the table. They are good with children, as well as large groups. Requests are no problems, separate bills are no problems, extra chips or salsa no problems. The restaurant is quiet, unassuming, and cozy with terracotta colored stucco walls and various Mexican hats and pictures setting the mood.
I frequently eat lunch here, and I am amazed that I can order, eat, and play all within half an hour without feeling rushed. They really go all out for the lunch crowd. Plus, if all the guys from the office come we can either sit at the big table, or we can sit a two booths, with the partition removed -- there is seating for groups of up to twenty. The typically lunch crowd is office and construction workers, there is pretention allowing everyone to feel comfortable no matter what they are wearing.
I typically order right off the lunch menu, which is reasonable priced and has a lot of items. The food is very typically Tex-Mex, an Americanized version of Mexican food, heavy with beans, cheese, sour cream and rice -- especially Mexican comfort food. The lunch portion of arroz con camarones is huge, flavorful and contains a lot of shrimp. The enchilada plate is smothered in enchilada sauce, and full of rice and beans. The carne asada is very flavorful and cooked just right.
This restaurant has been in Bellingham for a very long time, thanks to its loyal customers, quick service and well priced comfort food.
