Review

Anyone who has walked down Railroad Avenue is familiar with the heavenly smell that wafts out of The Bagelry, torturing hungry passersby. The large front windows offer a look inside to the ever-present book readers and coffee drinkers occupying the wooden tables and front counter of the restaurant. The business is separated into two sides; one side for orders to go and one side for dining. High ceilings and overhead fans give this bright breakfast eatery an airy, open feel.

As the name would imply, the focus of the Bagelry is hot, fresh bagels baked New York style from a secret recipe carefully guarded by the owner. Care is taken in the preparation of the bagels, and this special attention is reflected in the superior quality of the final product. Dough is hand rolled, “proofed,” boiled and baked. Bialy (pronounced “be-ah-lee”) style bagels are offered as well and are a variety of bagel without a hole; they are not boiled before they are baked. Despite the appeal to more sophisticated tastes, the prices of bagels are more than reasonable.

Novice bagel consumers may find themselves overwhelmed by the selection of bagels, not to mention the cream cheeses. Choices range from the more common raisin/cinnamon, blueberry and whole wheat bagels to pumpernickel, salted and bialy bagels for those with more eclectic tastes. Connoisseurs will not be disappointed with exotic cream cheeses like lox, sun-dried tomato and basil, scallion and a feta cheese/garlic/dill combination. Other breakfast items are included on the menu, including omelets, espresso and baked goods.

I can always count on The Bagelry for a smooth cup of French Roast at a reasonable price. Combine that with an out of this world fresh bagel and I'm in food heaven. Always warm and cozy with a busy big city atmosphere, it's fun to step into NY just for a minute!

The Bagelry reminds me of the many bagel shops I frequented as a kid in my native NY area of Brooklyn. The bagels are always fresh and usually still warm when you get them. If you're in the mood for bagels and you actually know what a "real" bagel is suppose to taste like then you HAVE to try the Bagelry. By the way, if you're an onion lover, try the Bialys!

Never have I felt so lowly about a place as I do this one. After reading positive reviews on multiple websites, excitement grew, anticipating a visit to the famed Bagelry in my personal food tour of Bellingham. In fact, it was the first stop I made upon arrival into town. Inside, the many workers buzzed about preparing for the morning rush. It was a few minutes before my existence was acknowledged. Then came the hello and my order of Italian spinach omelet and pumpernickel bagel was taken. As I sat there slowing taking apart my meal, I thought about how I would explain the food in a review. The verdict? Mediocre. The vegetables in the omelet were fresh, but the meal was nothing to be raved about. Sure the bagel was better than a store bought one, anything is better than store bought, but for a place that specializes in it, it was rather ordinary. Disclaimer: this review of the food was done in my head--without bias--prior to the following episode. Now for the beginning of a trip from hell. In walks my parents and little sister. Walking by, they saw me in the window and decided to join. My mom goes to the counter and orders the same thing I was having. She claims they told her to go to the back of the line, when clearly she was there before anyone else. I can't speak for her; I didn't see it happen, but I do trust her word. So we're sitting--me eating, my parents sipping on their Starbucks and waiting for their meal. All of a sudden, a worker stops by our table and says, "Just for next time, you can't have that. We serve coffee here." Okay, that's understandable. We're out of towners, Starbucks-craving city folk; we didn't know. Our bad. My mom, upset from her ordering experience, responded, "Don't worry, there won't be a next time." And in a very non-sincere voice, the worker asked, "Oh yeah, why is that?" My mother proceed to explain the situation to him. He barked back, "Well we'll pack your food to go then." She told them she was going to stay. He wouldn't have it. "No. We're packing your food." This went back and forth for a little bit. By now, we had the attention of everyone there. Appetites lost, my mom demanded a refund. They wouldn't budge. Not wanting to regret any decisions that this situation was taking her, she said, "Keep our money, keep the food." And out the door we went. Straight out of town actually. I want to know, since when did this become an acceptable way to treat paying customers? What kind of business are they running? Was that a legitimate reason to kick us out? And if so, could it have been done in a more respectful manner? We are all humans, and we all deserve to be treated with dignity. Never in my life have I been so mortified, hurt, and disappointed with the society in which we live. My family feels the same way. I urge you, fellow consumers, don't support a place that doesn't respect you. Spread the word. If it happened to us, it can happen to any of you

These just might be the best bagels anywhere, they are always fresh and great. Once you have had them you might never eat grocery store Bagels again.

My wife and two kids visted for a late breakfast - we each ordered to bagels each with a different cream cheese spread on each ( The lox and the garlic/feta/dill combo were awesome.) Prices were more than fair, with the service great for a place this busy. We will be back on our next visit to try some of the other foods offered. Good job Bagelry crew!!!

I've been a Bagelry customer for almost 20 years. They have the best bagels anywhere. Recently, I stopped in for breakfast after having purchased my favorite coffee next door. I ordered an omelet and was told by the counter worker that "this is a full service restaurant" and that they served coffee. I knew that, of course, and told him I didn't care for the Bagelry's coffee but had come in for breakfast. At that point, the exchange turned unbelievably weird. He argued in defense of their coffee, implying that I shouldn't have purchased mine elsewhere. He then asked me if I wanted the omelet to go. Not understanding, I declined. Then he said that the Bagelry was not a 'food fair' type place where customers could order 'what they wanted.' I confirmed that I knew it wasn't a food fair and that we'd come in for breakfast to eat there. Anyway, after a few vollies of vague inference, I realized that he was suggesting we leave. So for want of a principle, he forfeited our business. My friend was from out of town and I'd been raving about the Bagelry since she'd come to town. It was a demeaning experience and after all these years of patronage, it was a slap I won't forget. I later learned that this guy is the owner of the place.

I have eaten at The Bagelry for ten years and enjoyed it, except fot the last time. While eating there two weeks ago I saw a roach run across the newspaper I was reading while sitting in the window eating a omelette and bialy. I threw i out and won't go back.

Pumpernickel bagels are the BEST here. I used to buy 4 doz. and take them back to Hawaii in my suitcase when I lived over there. I'm now stuck in Sacratomato, CA and can't find similar ANYWHERE!!! The Biyali's are also FAB!!!!
