Hola! Who doesn't like Mexican food? Maybe some don't but for the rest of us, Whatcom County has a good selection of Mexican restaurants, not the least of which is a fun little place in downtown Bellingham called Taco Lobo. On a recent Saturday lunchtime, its 12 or so tables were almost all full and the Mexican family running the tiny kitchen at the back was working at full tilt.

Taco Lobo is small and bright; the walls are an intense blue and orange. Dominating one wall is a dramatic three-dimensional mural of the Moon Pyramid set against the Mexican sunset. Authentic Mexican tile covers the floor while the exterior facade is set in vivid red, green and yellow tile. Outside, a small patio area holds four tables with chunky curved leather chairs, a great place for warm-weather people-watching. The milieu is very casual--almost fast-food casual--since food orders are placed at the counter and the only menu is hand-written on a big blackboard.

The food, however, is definitely above fast-food standards. After placing our order, we were given a basket of still-warm taco chips to take to our table. We helped ourselves to salsa, which was fresh and tasty, with lots of veggies and cilantro. We tried the chicken enchiladas and a selection of tacos. Most entrees come with the ubiquitous refried beans--which were unremarkable--and Mexican rice, which was better than average, being mixed with small bits of carrot and having an appetizing flavor. The chicken enchiladas were good, and good-sized. The tacos, though, were REALLY savory - obviously made with fresh flour tortillas and authentic ingredients.

All in all, Taco Lobo is a good, local, casual Mexican restaurant offering satisfying portions at moderate prices, and makes a nice change from the chains.

This food is very authentic, just like what we ate in Baja. Very Clean, great staff. A+

My wife and I moved to Bellingham Nov 2 and after trying various resturants for lunch/supper we have settled on Taco Lobo. Good prices, great food, crowded at lunch but definitely worth it. Having travelled and eaten all over the world I give Taco Lobo 5 stars.

This is one of my favorite little Mexican restaurants. It's a very casual setting, with cafeteria style ordering, but the food is GREAT! I get take out from there all the time.

hello from prince george canada. we were at the taco lobo in january. found this awesome mexican resturant. great good. great selection. found the people to be very downhome and friendly. also very clean and awesome decor and cozy murals on the walls. l recomend this place highly

casa que pasa is closed now but still why would you ever eat there when taco lobo is right around the corner and is really really good food.

for vegetarians i recommend not eating any kind of authentic mexican food because mexicans aren't vegetarians, only middle class white people, hindu's and buddhists are. go to the co op for that sort of bland non meat food.

Vegetarians stick with Casa Que Pasa. When I asked about vegetarian items the Relleno was offered. After eating half the Chile Relleno, I began to question its ingredients. After checking with the cook, I learned the item was made with Chicken Stock.

Casa Que Pasa is horrendous. I'd take Taco Lobo over Casa any day. In fact, I haven't been to Casa since Lobo opened. What's with the prices since the reopen though? A bit steep for a burrito.
