Review

When the sky is the color of cement and you’ve been dodging freezing rain all day, Tokyo House is the place to go. Everyone who enters is greeted warmly and given a cup of hot green tea. Owner Jay Ahn is behind the sushi bar shouting hellos to everyone. He often runs up to the door from the kitchen to say "Hi" and shake hands with his favorite customers. In such a cozy, friendly environment it is hard to stay cold and grumpy for very long.

Start with a glass of sake or plum wine and peruse the sushi menu. The sushi menu is extensive, featuring nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, and regular sushi rolls. They’ve even got 10 kinds of vegetarian sushi. Note all the pretty names for raw fish and stare at the octopus and other sea life behind the glass of the sushi bar. But don’t stare too long--sushi tastes best when you don’t think about it. Take advantage of the twice-weekly Sushi happy hours.

There are plenty of other tasty items to discover besides sushi. Appetizers include Kim Chee (spicy Korean pickles) and Tempura dishes. Try a teriyaki entree of beef, salmon, prawn or tofu. O Bento boxes are also available. The Udon Noodles are spectacular. The chicken, prawn or veggie udon dishes are good, but you may opt for the more daring U Na Ju Udon, a barbecued eel on rice. Delicious miso soup comes with each entree and it is served scalding hot and perfect. Finish the meal with mango, green tea, ginger or tempura ice cream and relax with another refill of tea.

Tokyo House was the first Japanese restaurant in Bellingham and has been open since 1991. The restaurant recently returned to its original location on North Garden Street after a stint in Barkley Village and Jay admits he’s glad to be back.

I was not greeted for a few minutes when I came in. I also never recieved free tea. The service was under par, and I didn't feel a friendly vibe. The happy hour sushi menu is a joke. They say a dollar off, but most are only about 50 cents off.

Diana Wurn has it all wrong again! She calls the menu "extensive" while it's nothing more than the basic sushi-rookie junk. She mentions 10 kinds of vegi sushi? Well, without the fish, it's not really sushi, it's just a vegi-roll She then says "But don’t stare too long--sushi tastes best when you don’t think about it" If it's really good, thinking about it shouldn't be an issue. Then she calls Kimchee "spicy Korean pickles" It's actually pickled cabbage. Then she says U Na Ju Udon, is barbecued eel on rice. Actually "unagee" is the barbecued eel, and "udon" is a noodle soup. Get a clue Diana!!
