Longevity can be an indicator of a good business -- after all, to stay open requires a working formula for success. The World Famous Up & Up tavern on State Street has been doing it right for more than 15 years. Their key to success: cheap beer, casual atmosphere, entertainment, ample seating and cheap beer.

It may sound too good to be true, but it's too expensive to stay home Wednesday nights: The Up serves up cold pitchers of brew for $1 each. With no cover charge and a pocket full of quarters, a patron can enjoy traditional pub mainstays such as pool (six tables) and electronic darts for no more than five bucks.

For those who choose to ramble among pals, this alehouse has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Also, the Up & Up occasionally hosts Celtic-style bands and poetry slams.

For those who would drink a carton of expired milk before consuming Busch or Schmidt, these purveyors of beer also offer local microbrews and standard national brands. Before the stagger home, soak up the stomach suds with a made-to-order hamburger -- only $2. A penny-pincher's Utopia, it may go with out saying that the Up is a popular destination for students and anyone else stretching their funds. If a change of scenery is in order, several other drinking establishments are literally a stone's throw away.

All told, if the smoke doesn't bother you and the Doublewide's too packed -- or bar-hopping is just getting old altogether -- you might find refuge at the Up & Up.

The Up & Up bites.

Go to Le Chat Noir ... it's a much better scene. Oh, uh, forget that ... Le Chat Noir sucks

The Up & Up rules ... go there, not the "Cat"

25 years ago... the Up & Up was not only the place for cheap beer, it was also the source for kegs for most Bellingham parties.

The record, according to Don Bring the former owner, was 81 kegs for the Sunrise 6 party at Clayton Beach back in 1981.

WWU graduates who organized the Sunrise parties still get together to reminisce about the parties which ran from 1975 through 1982.

The first Sunrise party was the result of bet regarding the outcome of a soccer game between Kappa and Highland dorms. Kappa won the game (1-0) and a keg of beer, but Highland Hall delivered and tapped the prize at 6:00am the following Saturday morning.

Phooey, to the people who think the "Breakfast of Champions" tagline originated with Wheaties!
