If you’re looking for a relaxing place to get a bite to eat and a cup of tea, then you should know about the Abbey Garden Tea Room in Fairhaven. Relaxation seems to be the theme of the place. When you walk through the door you’ll likely see people flipping leisurely through magazines, engaged in quiet conversation, or simply sipping tea and staring out the window.

You will probably also see people quietly engaged in painting--ceramic painting, that is. The Abbey Garden Tea Room occupies the same space as "Paint Expressions", a paint-your-own-ceramic studio. The cost of the unpainted ceramic ware that lines the walls includes paint and firing. Simply choose your piece, choose your paint, and settle down to your artistic endeavor.

If painting sounds too ambitious, you can simply have tea. Let me explain: this is "Tea" in the British sense of the word, complete with plates of little sandwiches, fruit, scones and little cookies. The Abbey Garden Tea Room offers a generous selection of "Teas", the most elaborate of which is the "High Tea", which includes quiche or a pastry, little tea sandwiches, fresh fruit, a dish of sorbet, dessert, and of course a pot of tea. If you’ve arrived with a friend, you can order "Tea for two". If you prefer to have something simpler, the Abbey Garden’s menu also offers salads, soups, cheese plates and other lighter-style lunch fare, all of which are consistently well prepared.

The list of tea to brew is extensive, with choices ranging from black tea to herbal and everything in between, and all the teas are of good quality. Choosing what to eat and which tea to drink is the most you’ll have to exert yourself at the Abbey Garden Tea Room. Once you’ve decided, just sit back in your deep, soft armchair, grab a copy of "Majesty" magazine or sit and watch the ceramic painters on the main floor, and relax.

The new location for this tea room isn't as cozy as the old place. In this new location, the tables are much closer together, and I don't feel as relaxed having my tea when people are that close to me. Also, they should not allow cell phones in these places. I come to a tea house to relax and sip tea, not to hear other people answer their cell phone and talk loudly! The old place had an upstairs with cushy chairs (it was so lovely). I am sorry you had to move, and I will get over it, but I have to tell you, I miss your old place! Menu is GREAT, split pea soup is excellent and the tea, scones, finger sandwiches, etc. are very good! Staff is very nice.

The Abbey Garden Tea Room offers a delectable experience. I am now a senior at WWU and when I first moved here I made a goal of visiting all of the eateries in the area. It's a unique treat when the hectic day allows for a outting to this little tea house. It's calm, comfortable and warm and when you walk in though the doors, off the cobblestone walkway, it feels as though you've just popped in off the streets of an English village mainstreet. The tea is fresh and piping hot, the scones with fresh jam are warm and crumbly and their salads and tea sandwiches are just enough but not too much! Take a good book, sit on a cushion, sip your tea and let it rain outide without you!

I visited for the first time on my birthday last year with my friends. I LOVED it. We had tea and painted, and it was a wondeful relaxing time.

Food and tea were great, and the staff was wonderful. I am looking forward to coming again!!

I loved this place. It was relaxing and welcoming (unless a bunch of small children are there, but that's business!). There is a wide selection of teas and a great way to express yourself in painting, create a gift, or simply have some fun painting ceramics. I've recently recommended it to a friend going through cancer treatment as a way to take her mind off things and enjoy her creativity. Love this place!
