Review

On a night when our children were spending the night at their grandmother’s house, my husband and I found we had a rare evening to ourselves. This made us a little giddy. We could "step out"! But, where should we go? We were out of the habit of stepping out. We wanted to go someplace that was just for grown-ups. And my husband decided that we should certainly have a martini.

Imagine our surprise when we discovered a Martini Bar, right here in Bellingham. Poppe’s Bistro and Lounge, at the Best Western Lakeway Inn, is most decidedly a "grown-up" place. It’s sophisticated and comfortable, with an excellent selection of libations and food. The interior is at once spacious and intimate, with levels and layers of seating options. On the upper level, private and cozy booths and intimate smaller tables surround long, curved counters, which in turn surround the bar on the main level of the room. If you’d prefer to sit in the fresh air, French doors open up onto patio seating. This variety of seating makes Poppe’s a great place to go for a variety of reasons, from an evening out with your significant other, to an informal business meeting, to an evening of martini tasting with friends.

The martini list at Poppe’s is impressive, but Poppe’s also has a great selection of beers on tap (local brews included), a short but very well-chosen wine list, a nice list of Scotch, Cognac and Brandy, and a dazzling array of colorful-sounding mixed drinks. The food menu was equally satisfying to peruse -- a nice range of things from "Pies" (otherwise known as pizza), to fish-and-chips, to more upscale nightly dinner specials. A piano-man was playing and singing unobtrusively on the stage at the back of the room when we were there, and our server told us that Poppe’s regularly features live jazz and other music. All in all, we found Poppe’s to be the perfect place for grown-ups to step out.

I just got to say that Poppe's Bistro is THE BEST PLACE in Bellingham. It is located inside a beautiful hotel, the Lakeway Inn. The classy atmosphere makes you feel special. When I was there with a large party the server went out of her way to help us get situated. The drinks are fun and strong, served with a martini shaker on the side--what a deal. They have a huge selection of appetizers and are very reasonably priced. That's my favorite way to dine with friends, getting lots of different things and nibbling. We had so much fun, the live music just seemed to fit the place perfectly. The manager even took a photo of our group and printed it us, for a keepsake. I and as well as my friends will be back many times. Don't miss out on the nicest place in Bellingham.
