The Hotel Bellwether is Bellingham’s newest gem. It is a European-style luxury hotel strategically located right on the water with breathtaking views of Mt. Baker, the Chuckanut Mountains, and the San Juan Islands. This may not be the place for the faint of heart financially, but for special occasions or a business conference or a getaway weekend, there is now no better place in Bellingham.

Visitors can choose between rooms with a water or mountain view. Bedroom suites feature a king-size bed with European-style down comforters, Italian furnishings, a small sitting area with fold-out couch, desk, TV, and gas fireplace. The marble bathrooms are the ultimate in luxury, with an enclosed shower and the large thermo-masseur bathtub. The shutter-like doors next to the tub open into the bedroom, so you can enjoy a good soak while watching TV or chatting with your loved one.

The hotel also features its own bar and lounge--the Sunset Lounge--which offers a warm, intimate atmosphere with background piano music, a fireplace, and a waterfront view. The bar has an excellent wine selection and several Northwest-style beers on tap. After a relaxing glass of wine or cocktail, head to the Harborside Bistro Restaurant for dinner. The Compass Room, where a European-style continental breakfast is served, is reminiscent of a British gentleman’s club with dark leather sofas, fireplace, and stately, yet cozy decor.

With private meeting rooms and catering services, the Bellwether is an excellent choice for business getaways or conferences. Wedding packages are also available and for those who arrive by boat, a private dock is available. Those who want some extra practice before heading out to any of Whatcom County's golf courses can take advantage of the Bellwether’s putting green.

However, the hotel’s crowning achievement is the Lighthouse Suite--a three-story lighthouse with bed and bath, entertainment bar, private spiral staircase, and an awesome observation tower. You and your loved one can even enjoy a private meal with champagne and caviar served by a butler. Now that’s luxury.

We selected this hotel just from internet information and the description on this site. It was a delightful find. The rooms were luxurious and quiet. There was a wedding the weekend we were there and we didn't hear anything. The staff were pleasant and service oriented. We had what was called an inside or internal view; however, the room looked over the entry courtyard and a bit of water which was a pleasant view. We could walk to nearby restaurants and the spa. Other than the distance to other activities (e.g. downtown and fairhaven) I think it is wonderfully located. My two MINOR complaints would be that the continental breakfast should not be a separate charge; the food was fine but not worth the cost on top of a fairly costly room. And second the faucet for the soaking tub is too small and thus it takes a long time to fill the tub and the water gets cold while you wait. But those are no reason not to go!
