Review

In a bucolic setting about 30 minutes north of Bellingham, on the tip of a peninsula that once was the site of a historic salmon-packing cannery, sits Resort Semiahmoo. The drive down winding country roads, with views of deer, eagles and other wildlife is part of what some guests find relaxing about the trip.

The resort includes a marina, a full-service spa and two golf courses, including one designed by Arnold Palmer. The property is immense and features a workout room with indoor racquetball courts, an indoor tennis court, sauna, a large pool and a Jacuzzi big enough for 15 friends. Besides the enormity of the resort, a few things stand out that make it unique. When perusing the website, one notices pictures of guests relaxing at the resort with their pets. Your pup will even get a doggie welcoming bag on arrival with treats and some helpful instructions on how to follow the resort pet rules.

The resort has ear-to-ear views of the water, and rocking chairs are set up near the shore so guests can enjoy the sunset outdoors. Most rooms face the water, providing a view of Puget Sound and the comforting sound of waves hitting the beach. In summer, guests are even given marshmallows to roast at the beach bonfire. Resort activities include free year-round concerts, kayaking around the peninsula, boating, or favorite non-seasonal activities -- eating good food at one of the three restaurants and simply gazing at the water.

The newly redecorated rooms have soft tones and a cabin-like feel. Many have fireplaces and decks. The luxurious beds have giant down comforters and plush sheepskin bedding. Other comforts include dual sinks, cordless phones, robes in the closet, and a newspaper at the door in the morning. Despite the many luxuries, the peaceful area itself is the real attraction. It is most relaxing just to walk around the resort and enjoy the beauty of the area. Depending on room availability, Whatcom County residents are eligible for a discounted rate.

Directions

Take exit 270 off I-5 and follow the signs to Semiahmoo: take a left from off-ramp and go to Harborview Road and turn right, then go to Lincoln Street and turn left and that will wind around to the resort.

My husband and I spent 3 nights here for our Honeymoon in 2008. The rooms are absolutely amazing. The service was great, from the front desk, to the cleaning crew, to the seating hostess at the cafe's. We didn't do the spa or golf thing, because just walking along the beach and gazing at the beautiful view was fun enough for us! It's spendy, but worth it!
