Review

The hostess at Stars leads us through the large dining room to a table facing the water. Wine is offered and at once the waiter appears with fresh bread along with a smoked salmon spread. As the sun sets, the whole room fills with warm light. At dusk, the lights of White Rock in Canada appear across the bay. It’s hard not to feel like there is a lot to celebrate. On weekends, a pianist provides even more atmosphere at the baby grand piano in the corner. A candlelit wine room features a private area for dining that can be reserved in advance.

Menu items include exotic combinations of Northwest foods as intriguing as the surroundings. Appetizers might be oysters in champagne sauce mingled with crispy prosciutto, or wild Gulf prawns that come with a smoke pepper cream sauce and turtle bean puree. The main courses are also quite a production. The prawn and sea scallop Provencal with fresh herbs, garlic and tomatoes included seafood grilled perfectly. It was happily coupled with a flavorful polenta dish made of cornmeal, cream sun-dried tomatoes and garlic. The seared crispy chicken with Dijon tarragon crust and apple cider sauce was presented as a work of art and also came with polenta. Many entrees are the kind you may not run across on a menu every day, such as the arctic char on ratatouille with lemon and hazelnut beurre blanc.

Stars also serves breakfast. Belgian waffles, buttermilk pancakes and biscuits with gravy are on the menu. The Semiahmoo omelets can be made with button mushrooms, sweet peppers, spring onions, plum tomatoes, smoked ham, pork sausage, smoked bacon or smoke sockeye salmon. If you are lucky enough to be staying at Resort Semiahmoo, many items can be delivered to the room. Reservations at the restaurant are recommended.

Directions

Take exit 270 off I-5 and follow the signs to Resort Semiahmoo. The restaurant is in the main building.

Stars at Slumy-ahmoo is a restaurant to be avoided at all cost. Undercooked scallops to overcooked asparagus with bland au gratin potatoes is an on-going theme here. We were the latest in a long list of unhappy patrons to mistakenly darken their doorway. Asking the same disinterested waitress numerous times for a glass of water or cup of coffee was followed by having to bus our own table. The automatic service charge added to the bill obviously added to the apathy of the staff. This place is poorly managed. You can get better service at the local fastfood joint. Save your money, stay home or eat elsewhere.
