It could be argued that some of the most diverse topography in Whatcom County can be found at Dakota Creek golf course in Custer. A course that features a landscape with a little bit of everything, Dakota Creek appears to present a unique microcosm of the beautiful region that surrounds it.

The course built on a hill; Dakota’s landscape influence may best be described as adaptation. Instead of moving tons of land, Dakota Creek does a nice job of using the natural features to create a unique and highly enjoyable round of golf. As a result, the course features fairways with rolling hills, lush vegetation, and unusual hazards that would make even Tiger Woods blush.

Highlighting the round may be the 319-yard number 3 hole, in which golfers must tee off over a rather deep ravine. The cart path then leads you down through the ravine, over a small creek then up the other side. Golfers may choose to spend some time down by the creek looking for the mulligan they shanked down there earlier. Other unique holes include the 78-yard par-3 on two and hole eight, which requires golfers to reach the pin only after enduring a harrowing 30-degree incline to the green.

But, perhaps the most enduring part of the course is the newly opened back nine, which rests on top of a large hill and offers spectacular views of North Whatcom County, including Birch Bay and the San Juan Islands. It is here that the course straightens out, allowing golfers back into the more traditional world of straight, wide fairway golf found in most courses in Whatcom County. It is also here that you can make up some of the strokes you lost on the front nine.

In a region that maintains a large number of treeless links courses, Dakota Creek is one of the original purveyors of au-natural golf in Whatcom County. The thick vegetation lining most fairways adds a beautifully distinct boundary to many holes. This also means, of course that a hook or slice is out of the question. The well-manicured fairways and greens provide some of the only traces of construction in a course that seems to have been designed completely by Mother Nature.

Take I-5 to exit 270. Take the first left and continue to Haynie Road. Turn right and the golf course is about 50 feet farther on.

To make a long story short, the lady in the pro shop treats canadians like we don't know squat. They scamed me on my credit card then blamed me for the error and hung up on me And she says they are canadian friendly!

Very interesting Golf course. Very Hilly, some water, lots of trees. Made a aboslutely awesome shot on the Par 4 11th hole which is a Par Blind Tee shot hole up hill all the way. Hit a great tee shot and because i did not see it land i could not find my ball. Assuming i lost i hit another ball only to find out that my partner just happend to look inside the hole to find my tee shot in the hole. Hole in one on a Par 4. Great Golf course.

I was expecting polite staff and a quirky golf course, with less than average conditions, (only because of the low price). However, this is a gem of a course. The staff/greenskeepers were polite, but the greens were in very good condition, (it seems the local clientele are adept at repairing ball marks). The fairways were also in great shape. We decided to walk the back nine, (for the exercise), and I was beginning to regret our decision as we climbed up to the viewtop back nine, but it just added to the excellent golfing experience that this wonderful course provided.

I have played this course six times since it expanded to 18 holes. You get a lot of challenging golf(and exercise) for the money. Very up and down, and it is a real "ball eater" with lots oftrees and brush lining many fairways. Can be too wet in the dead of winter. Staff have always treated us politely.

My husband and I golf Dakota 1-2 times a week during the Spring & Summer. We love ut...The staff is friendly and the course is great.

M friends and I have been golfing at Dakota for at least 6 years and the staff has always been very friendly. We are Canadians and we are always greeted with a friendly smile and a welcome back. The course has improved a great deal over the years and continues to improve. It is not too difficult but you learn to hit all kinds of shots with the ball above and below your feet.

I played the course on August 17th with a group of members of the Gyro fraternity and our guests. The course is certainly a challenge and the staff did an excellent job of catering to our needs. I think that we all had a great day and are looking forward to returning again next year.
