Review

I admit I had some trepidation about driving to Everson to go to a German food and steakhouse restaurant. I pictured a menu with nothing but sausages with unfamiliar names and schnitzel. Still unclear on the definition of schnitzel, I began to panic. That is, until I stepped inside.

The chef could be seen behind glass in the kitchen grilling steaks while diners talked over thick lace tablecloths and candlelit meals. There was a great smell coming from the grill. Bookshelves lined the walls and the front dining room was dark and cozy like a Bavarian cottage. Definitely a special occasion restaurant, it was nothing like what I had imagined. The menu features many different types of steaks, but there is also chicken, lobster and other items to choose from. Each entree comes with choice of Caesar salad, lentil soup or goulash. Garlic bread comes with the meal and also a flavorful potato dish. The garlic bread was toasted perfectly and I felt no shame in demanding more than my share. The waiter was very accommodating, even about the gluttonous bread requests, and I felt like chancellery.

Definitions of steak preparation--from rare to well-done--are provided below the list of steak options. If you make the unfortunate decision to order a steak well-done you are officially warned that it will be "sadly overcooked, all the goodness and juiciness destroyed, dried out, and 22% of the steak lost in shrinkage and not recommended." The entrees were fabulous and there was enough salad and bread to fill up on before the meal even came. Because the portions are so generous, there is no doubt you will leave with leftovers. For dessert, try the Black Forest Torte and coffee. After dinner you may find yourself chanting German pub songs and will never fear the word schnitzel (a "breaded pork cutlet") ever again.

We LOVE this restaurant. After our first visit, I started referring to it as the crack house as it is so addictive. A perfectly rare and seasoned steak: how hard is that to accomplish? This place makes it look so easy. Some day we will sit in the main restaurant, but for now, the bar (and the bar steak) is for me.

I have been to the Black forest steak house on special dates and birthdays, and I have to tell you it is got to be the best steak house in Whatcom County. I highly recommend the Filet Mignon Oscar. Possibly the best steak they do. Thanks Jack Nieman for a wonderful place to dine in the county!

Very very good food, but a bit pricey for the average budget.

The “Back Forest” in Everson has had its name changed to “Herb Niemann’s Steak House”. The new website is: www.eversonsteakhouse.com

Jack Niemann I am so glad you are in Bellingham now and cooking such great food, I know you are the real true original owner and founder of the Black Forest Chain. I will be back, keep up the great job!

Please note everybody that the Everson Black Forest Steakhouse is among the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. It is well worth the drive to Everson. DO not confuse it with the one in Bellingham. They are NOT owned by the same person.

TAKE THE TIME TO DRIVE TO EVERSON. IT IS WORTH
THE EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE. The Bellingham restaurant does not compare.

I recently had a very disapponting dinning experience at the BLACK FOREST in Bellingham. Upon arriving, the waitress was rude toward us and our service, serving us burnt bread. Recieving our appetizers, and even our main dishes, Lannie did not even offer us fresh ground pepper, while at the table behind us she did so at every opportunity. Concerning the food, the 16 oz. ribeyes served was far below quality and quanity standards I had experienced in establishments. I sampled the other meals servered and was not impressed: the Schnitzel Oskar was one tough pork cutlet, and the Beef Stroganoff, while being tender, was exteremely underwhelming. I also noted that none of the side dishes served with our main courses were above average.

I have been to the Black Forrest several times, and have always had one of the best steak dinners ever, on my top 3 list. Last night, I took a lady friend for dinner, and the carpetbagger (one of my favorites) was one of the worst steaks I have ever had. It was cooked fine (med rare) but was almost un-edible, with so much gristle and sinew, the sauce was fine. For a 27.00 steak, I hope this is not a sign of things to come.

My wife and I were vacationing at our trailer in Maple Falls and decided to celebrate New Years a day early to beat the rush. We had driven by the Black Forrest Steakhouse afew times but nothing from the out side sparked our interest to go in, it looked like the typical "hole in the wall place". We were looking for something easy and quick and hoping the food was "semi-good" so we tried it. Well we were totally blown away! The food was not only GOOD it was GREAT! We both commented that we hadn't had steak that good in years! Getting in and being seated was alittle tricky, but well worth the time and effort! I personally recommend the Logger Steak 12oz sirloin with grilled mushrooms and onions!!! Please try this place next time you’re going through Everson, you won’t be sorry! …Mark

Trying to match 12 years of excellent regional restaurant experiences, I was looking for the "hidden gem" restaurant near Lynden to take our group of Labor Day Weekend bicyclists to this year.
Shortly before heading for our base camp hotel in Lynden, I found this website and it's sterling reviews of the Black Forest Steak House, in Everson.
Judging from the deligted comments of our group, the restaurant lived up to its reputation.
Our group of 12 ordered a pretty broad range of dishes from the menu—from Jaeger Schnitzel to Filet and it was all quite delicious.
Our server was delightful and the surroundings were suitably rustic without going over the top...from the axe-handle door pull at the entrance to the big-screen-like view of the grill chef doing his magic.
I would recommend a visit to the Black Forest the next time you're in or near Whatcom County.

The Black Forest is by far one of our most favorite places to eat. Whether we're looking for casual seating in the Lounge for their famous Bar Steak or if we're stepping it up a bit for seating in the Resturant, we can always expect a great meal. The portions are big so bring a healthy appitite. But get there early, it's a happening little spot on the weekends.
