If spending a day picnicking, playing or strolling beneath the cedar spires of an old-growth forest sounds perfect to you, then the hearts’ desire of Hans and Lida Berthusen has come full circle. Berthusen Park, located west of Lynden on Berthusen Road, stands as testimony to the industry and generosity of these early Whatcom homesteaders. Hans Berthusen single-handedly cleared 100 acres of the densely forested land back in 1883, but left twenty more of it in virgin timber, so that he wouldn’t forget what the land had looked like before he started. He left the land to the City of Lynden in 1944 as a memorial park, so that future generations would remember as well.

The Berthusens’ enormous, old barn still stands proudly on the property, at the entrance to the park. On the field around it, retired and resting, is antique farm machinery. But the road into the park keeps going over a bridge and into the shade of the ancient trees, and the farm and all the work it implies quickly fades from memory. Once into the park, visitors have quite a few options for more leisurely activities. Three covered shelters are available for group reservations, and a generous quantity of picnic tables and barbeque pits are scattered beneath the forest canopy, for those who prefer to picnic in the shade at the spur of the moment. There are slides, swings and other playground equipment for younger children, and areas for baseball, horseshoes and volleyball for kids of all ages. Wide, well-maintained trails lead off into the woods for visitors who prefer to stroll through the old growth and second-growth areas of the park. An Interpretive Trail leads off through the woods on the east side of the park, with printed pamphlets on a box at the head of the trail for those who are curious about the vegetation.

Extreme tidiness prevails throughout this well-managed park, where the forest floor practically looks swept. There are very charming, old-fashioned and neatly carved wooden signs scattered here and there, marking trails, or encouraging visitors to drive slowly. Visitors get a strong sense that the Park Stewards really care about the place, and will continue to protect the Berthusens’ legacy for time out of mind.

Take the Bay-Lynden Road exit (270) off I-5 & head east for 7 miles then left on Berthusen Road to the park.

My stay was most enjoyable.
The hospitality given by hosts Earl and Pat Nydam made me feel right at home. I highly recommend your facilities to friends and family. I lokk forward to visiting the beautiful friendly confines of Berthusen Park very soon.

I attended the Price Family Reunion at the park on August 16, 2008, along with 140 related members. Such a pleasant place to picnic and photograph the crowd. So clean and well kept. Thank you for all you do.

I recommend visiting Berthusen Park, me and my children have enjoyed camping, and riding on the bike trails through out the park, lots of fun, plan on visiting again soon
