If you are looking for an outdoor recreation experience that offers you the best that Whatcom County has to offer, then visit Silver Lake Park. The park is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Mt. Baker Recreation Area making it a perfect destination regardless of the season.

Silver Lake Park is a remarkable 411-acre public recreation facility about 40 minutes east of Bellingham. Its outdoor recreation opportunities are virtually endless. The main attraction of the Silver Lake Park is Silver Lake and the myriad of water-related activities it provides. If boating is your passion, launch your own watercraft at the public boat launch or rent a rowboat, hydro bike, pedal boat or canoe. If you prefer to get into the water, there is a swimming beach. Unless you’re the hardy type, however, I’d recommend swimming in late summer for maximum warmth. The fishing is great too! Check in at the seasonally run tackle shop for tips on what’s biting that day. When you start feeling a bit peckish, visit the food concession for any snacks you might have forgotten to bring along.

Horseback enthusiasts will love Silver Lake Park because it features several miles of riding trails, stables available for park users, horse camping and ample horse trailer parking. (You’ll especially want to ride the 1/2- mile lookout trail for some spectacular views).

For parents with small children or just day trippers, Silver Lake Park is a dream as it offers play equipment, a beach, shelters to eat that special picnic lunch and hiking trails. Those who'd like to stay awhile can overnight it in a tent, RV, trailer or, if they really enjoy "roughing it," rent one of the six fully equipped cabins right on the lake. (These are quite popular so I would call early to reserve one.) There’s also group camping areas and a lodge for larger gatherings. Be aware that rates for camping, cabins, lodge and picnic shelter rental vary dramatically depending upon time of year and options you choose.

And if all of this isn’t enough, check out the Gerdrum Historical House and Black Mountain Forestry Center for some insight into early Whatcom County. So whether you’re a newlywed looking for a honeymoon getaway, planning family reunion or just looking for some outdoor fun or a quick camping experience, take a trip to Silver Lake Park. It’s a place you don’t want to miss!

Directions

From I-5, take the Mount Baker Highway (Exit 255) exit and drive east 28 miles to Maple Falls. Turn left on Silver Lake Road and follow the signs to the park (about three miles).

Silver Lake is a logger's lake and it's pretty stagnant. I wouldn't swim in it for NOTHING. It's not sanitary. I would rather swim in the Nooksack R. At least the river is fresher. Cold, but fresh!

First To Review
Just thought it was worth mentioning that the Look out Trail that was refered to is not an equestrian trail (no horses permitted on that trail). Also there are no views from the trail at all. When the park was developed in the mid sixties there was a clearcut on the top of the little hill that the trail goes over, and you could see the lake from the top. Forty years later thats no longer the case however it's still a beautiful trail and a mushroomers delight in the fall.

I try to make it here at least twice a year. I enjoy taking pictures & walking around the lake. Sometimes with my grand kids, sometimes alone. Very peaceful place & awesome things to take pictures of.

This is one of the most beautiful lakes we have camped at. The kids have enjoyed the park,field and lake for 3 years now. Last year we got swimmers itch, but not the years before. One year there were thousands of tad poles on the fishing banks and the kids spent hours catching them. We love renting the boats and just enjoying the wildlife. One of our best family trips.

Another enjoyable camping trip with the exception of the large group campsite in the field area. The noise level there in the quiet hours of the park can be very bothersome and difficult to sleep. My family loves to camp there but it would be very nice if the park rangers would frequent the large campsite to keep the noise level to a minimum.

At Silver Lake your children WILL get swimmers itch! They have signs warning you about swimmers itch. They do not tell you that after a half an hour your kids will start to itch while still swimming. Once they start to itch, you can't wash it off! It is horrible, just like the chicken pox! DO NOT GO IN THE LAKE.
