Description:
Located downtown near City Hall and the County Courthouse, the Bellingham Public Library serves Whatcom County as its largest public library. The building is modern, as it was recently renovated. By the numbers, the library holds over 258,000 books in its collection and has a circulation of nearly one million books annually. The library also has a large children’s library and a meeting room for local community groups.
As one would expect, the library contains the staples of public libraries: atlases, almanacs, regional phone books, administrative code, Whatcom County Code and Revised Code of Washington. Also available is an entire collection of genealogy, historical registries and local history for research. The collection of magazines is quite respectable; the major newspapers are represented, including all of the periodicals from Washington state. Also, several thousand books may be checked out on tape and a surprisingly wide selection of music CDs are available.
The system for searching for books and periodicals is by computer. Although the system is relatively dated, it is straightforward and easy to use. Searching can be performed by subject, title or author, and all three methods yielded accurate results.
