From Holly Street, go right on Prospect at the Holly/Bay street intersection. The museum is just past the main museum. Description: Anyone traveling down Prospect Street would find the Whatcom Children’s Museum hard to miss. The side of the building is a mural of bright colors, soft rounded shapes, images of the harbor, ships and the mountains around the bay. The windows are decorated with wooden cut-outs in the shape of geometric designs which let light into the inside. The exterior is indeed a reflection of the nature of the Children’s Museum -- a place of learning and fun for young children. Hands-on learning is emphasized with interactivity being the key element in the majority of exhibits and exercises. Rotating exhibts challenge the mind, and a puppet theater occupies one corner of the museum. There are also craft and art workshops in a classroom-type setting. Field trips and "Wonder" workshops are also offered on a regular basis. "Wonder" boxes are also provided -- Tupperware tubs with fun, educational material for children to work with to learn on their own. Two computers are also available for use, although I will admit it was a bit odd seeing them on a desk that was just two-feet high. Aimed at children one- through eight-years old, the museum serves many functions beyond those of traditional historical organizations. The Children’s Museum style is half way between a preschool and a hands-on learning organization, such as the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. Although the museum is operated by the same organization as the Whatcom Museum and receives money through Whatcom Society fundraisers, it is not operated by the city. The museum is popular.
