Description:
The Mount Baker Theatre is a visual and historic landmark of downtown Bellingham. The theater opened in 1927 as a part of the 20th Century Fox chain -- another example of the architecturally-exotic movie palace phenomenon of that era. Renovated in 1995, the theater is a plush, opulent and well cared-for reminder of the roaring 20’s.

Unlike many other Egyptian theaters from the same time period, the Mount Baker Theatre is styled after the architecture of Moorish Spain. It is interesting to note that all of the wood in the lobby ceilings and the ornate columns is faux -- plaster painted to appear wooden or alabaster. Restoration was painstaking, and contractors were brought in from outside the area to do the time-consuming work. Complex and intricately-painted designs in dark reds and tans cover the walls, ceilings and arches. The entire theater has a formal and distinguished feel, including dark, wooden chairs that are more like small thrones, and carpets emblazoned with royal red lions.

The Mount Baker Theatre serves as a performing arts venue that hosts touring Broadway productions and world-class dance groups such as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Music and comedy acts such as Ray Charles and Gallager also perform here. In addition, the theater hosts a Family Series featuring high-quality shows geared towards children and an Education Series that brings in over 15,000 area students each season. Annual events include the annual Academy Awards night in March and a fall Gala Fundraiser.

My first experience in the Mount Baker Theatre was watching "Platoon" in 1986. Wow! What a beautiful theatre.

First time at the Theatre. What a lovely venue. Comfortable seating, excellent sound. Pleased to see old theatres still going strong. Atmosphere so much more 'electric' in the old buildings. Ian Anderson was fantastic as always, but the theatre enhanced his performance.
