Description:
The Little Cheerful is a great place to kick start your day. Having heard pleasant rumors about the breakfasts, I took the precaution of taking a brisk walk around Zuanich Point Park before taking my place at the table, and it proved to be a good move.

With a prime downtown location (311 Holly, corner of Holly and Railroad), The Little Cheerful is well named, from the warm ochre paint, the red kites hanging from the ceiling, the eclectic art works, the cheery music and staff, to the main event - wonderful home cooking and at good value -- what’s not to like? A pleasant mix of visitors and locals makes this a convivial corner, a relaxing place to come either alone or with a group.

Whatever you order, be sure to include hashbrowns. These hashbrowns ("Famous since Bellingham was a baby") are superb, just the right crispness on the outside, and perfectly done inside. Servings are generous -- a side of hashbrowns was brought to an adjoining table to delighted "Oh my God!!"s, and "That’s a side???" Plate sized pancakes will satisfy the hungriest. The breakfast menu is extensive and entertaining, take your time over it with some Agri-Bay coffee. I would like to bring my English brother here just to see him enjoy ordering an "Egg McStupid", or possibly the "Big Stupid" (eggs, bacon, tomato, cheddar cheese). Omelettes are popular and again, generous. A mini -foothill sized Denver omelette arrived to a chorus of "Wow"s. In summer, sit outside and order your Meditarranean omelette (feta, olives, tomatoes…) for a northwest style European sidewalk café experience.

But this is more than a breakfast place. Lunches, all sandwiches served on ciabatta bread, include the quarter pound "Belli Burger" and the half pound "Myocardial Infarction Burger" (T-shirts available!), so you have been warned. A good range of lighter offerings, some vegetarian, are on the lunch menu -- the chicken pesto sandwich looked tempting, also the soups and salads. My guess is that lunch here would be as rewarding as breakfast.

Payment is by cash or check only (non-local checks accepted), so park the plastic for this meal. No reservations, but you can call to check on space availability.
