Tucked discreetly into a spacious area in the basement of a historic building on Chestnut Street is The Nightlight Lounge, where Bellingham’s music aficionados of all ages go to see critically acclaimed, live music of all genres. For some of us, a visit to the list of upcoming shows on their Website may initially produce quite a few whats, whos and never-heard-of-‘ems, immediately followed by the sinking realization that we’ve become woefully out of touch with the current music scene. However if we read a little longer, clicking on the names of bands and reading descriptions and reviews, we might find ourselves intrigued, and anxious to get caught up. From hip-hop to bluegrass and from the blues to punk rock, the Nightlight manages to book excellent music in every category.
As to the venue itself, the Lounge is made up of three smaller, more intimate rooms that open up onto either the dance floor or the main bar area. Two of these rooms offer pool tables and pinball machines, and one of them has couches and retro-style chairs for visiting, watching the dance floor or taking a break from the action. All of these rooms are outfitted with small video screens, so wherever you happen to be in the place, you can still keep an eye on the band. A full bar is located conveniently in front of the main entrance, and another is just off the dance floor (and in operation only during peak hours).
The folks here in Bellingham who are indeed anxious to get caught up on the current music scene should consider themselves lucky to live here. The Nightlight is very often able to book nationally known bands, talking them in to stopping by Bellingham on their way to or from Vancouver. With such great acts stopping here and such a great venue to see them in, catching up is fun to do.
