Description:
Osaka Japanese Restaurant is one of the more unique restaurants in Bellingham. I can’t think of another place in town at which I can get both a good meal and take a short stroll through a Japanese garden. That’s right -- when the owners of Osaka moved into their current location on Northwest Avenue they put in a good-sized Japanese garden, complete with a traditional Asian-style bridge and pond. It would have been perfectly reasonable -- especially given the good quality of their food -- to turn all of the space outside their building into parking. But the garden creates a lovely view out the back windows of the restaurant and, as I said, makes Osaka unique.

When you can tear yourself away from the garden and walk inside the restaurant, you’ll find that the interior of the place is just as pleasing as the exterior. During the day you’ll find it clean and bright, with an interesting collection of Japanese art tastefully displayed on the walls. In the evening the ambience is warm and pleasant, with tiny lanterns flickering on all the tables. Osaka also has one spacious and comfortable tatami room for larger parties lucky enough to book it ahead of time, and space for diners at the sushi bar as well.

The lunch and dinner menus at Osaka are some of the most complete -- in terms of Japanese food -- in town. They include sushi, teriyaki, yakisoba, tempura and stir fry, with generous combination platters for both lunch and dinner. If you’re there with a date and can’t decide what to order, try one of the "Love Boat" dinner combinations. This meal is an impressive display when it arrives, and depending on which version you order, you’ll get tempura (fresh and perfectly fried), miso soup (never too salty), sunomono salad and an assortment of sushi. If you’re there strictly for sushi, you’ll find the selection extensive, and the quality of the fish impressively fresh and well prepared. The folks at Osaka pay attention to the smaller details of a dining experience, for instance, brewing the green tea to order with loose tea leaves rather than tea bags. This attention to detail makes it a worthwhile place to visit.

There's this one waitress there who is cute but is kind of odd (shy?) at the same time. I ordered the sashimi platter and a couple of the cuts were sinewy and tough. The amount of food was not substantial at all and shredded daikon filled most of the plate. It was lunch time and it wasn't busy at all. I'm on the fence about this place. I might try it once more but order something different.

I used to go to Osaka all the time and I even had a birthday party there because they claimed to be vegetarian friendly. Being vegan, I am always on the lookout for places I can enjoy with my friends. Once, I brought a group of friends from out-of-town there for dinner, one of whom was vegetarian, and when we ordered my ususal order, including the "special" vegetarian salad, the waitress, (the same waitress who had previously been friendly and had told me they could make this special vegan salad), rudely exclaimed that it was not vegetarian because there was fish oil in it. In fact, there was fish oil in a number of their "veggie"items. She was unapologetic and completely unconcerned with my dismayed and shocked reaction. I have not been back since. I do not recommend going there because of their rudeness and dishonesty. Kyoto and Wasabee are definitely MUCH better, both in their food and their service.
