Description:
Tony’s Coffee House was the first place I went in town when I came to Bellingham four years ago to check out Western Washington University. The down-to-earth atmosphere, eclectic staff and clientele probably had as much to do with my final decision to come here as anything else. Located in the heart of old Fairhaven across the street from the fabulous Village Books, it’s a great place to escape for an hour or two and enjoy a latte and biscotti. The collection of worn chess sets have received countless hours of my attention as well. Tony’s has undergone a few face-lifts since my first visit, most noticeably the opening of the Harris Avenue Cafe in its upper section, but that same eclectic feel is there. Hardwood floors, big bay windows and old style stained glass porticos give the place a warm, homey feeling that seems to appeal to most everyone.

The main reasons for going to Tony’s are the coffees and teas, of course. The dry coffee and tea outlet has been moved downtown proper, but you can still get the wet kind here. The barista whips up some unique and interesting concoctions in the espresso department, using Tony’s own Orca Espresso Blend. Beyond the traditional lattes and mochas lie options like the exotic Moroccan; a mocha made with unsweetened chocolate, providing a mellow alternative to the heavy sweetness of your average mocha. Then there’s my personal favorite, the Fantasia; a mocha with a thick slice of orange squeezed and left in the cup. They’ve even got several frozen drinks, whipped up before your eyes in classic soda-jerk style. Tony’s tea selection features 58 different types, including products from Tony’s own label, Celestial Seasonings and Twinnings. They also carry six medicinal selections.

The Harris Street Cafe, which opened in October of 1998, offers a tempting breakfast menu featuring delicious omelets, pan fried red potatoes, crepes and all the standard morning fare. Their lunches consist largely of hot and cold sandwiches, soups and salads, as well as a limited cold menu after 2 p.m. And even though it’s got a separate name and a fresh paint job, the Harris still carries Tony’s old charm and relaxed atmosphere. The expansion has simply added one more reason to visit this popular locals retreat.

I was on way to Seattle from Everson and was told to stop in Fairhaven. We went to Tony's and I ordered scrambled eggs with cheese. I enjoyed that so much that I have always remembered it, and eventually I would like to move to Bellingham area. I would make Tony's my first stop! I love the feel or Fairhaven, it is a charming town.

Growing up in bellingham was great, and tonys was part of it. We used to go there and get the biggest cinnamon rolls you have ever seen. we would eat them while sitting on the old train car out back. tonys (and Fairhaven) has become something that I could have never imagined. what's next reservations at Wins. i miss the wild black cats and the wonderful hippies.

This brings back memories. Tony's was my old weekend hangout. My first espresso experience before the big coffee boom. After 17 years, I still can't seem to find a coffee joint that comes close to matching the atmosphere at Tony's. Your review makes me miss Bellingham !!
