From downtown Bellingham, drive down W. Holly St., on left hand side of road, across from Maritime Heritage Park.
Description:
Do you ever find yourself craving Mexican food? Tri-colored nachos with spicy salsa? Enchiladas covered in Monterey Jack cheese? If so, then just head downtown to Jalapenos Family Mexican Restaurant and Lounge on W. Holly St.
I went there on a recent evening to satisfy just such a craving. When I was seated, the waiter informed me that burritos, tacos, and enchiladas were the special. With a beer on the way, I snacked on the large complimentary plate of tri-colored nachos with freshly made salsa and contemplated the diverse menu, which offers typical Mexican dishes as well as new, innovative ones such as a Mexican version of Spanish Paella. For a group of guests, you can even order Fiesta Trays consisting of a combination of tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, shrimp and fish. In addition to the diverse menu, Jalapenos has a wide selection of Chilean and Spanish wines, Mexican beer and --don't let me forget-- margaritas. The staff can recommend a great wine to go with your dinner. Actually, looking at the menu and the Specials list, every night at Jalapenos is Specials Night. Don't miss the fresh made salsa bar with la casa de salsas and the salsa sampler.
I satisfied my craving with a generous portion of chicken enchiladas, refried beans, and Mexican rice. In addition to being very tasty, spicy, and yet not too mind-blowing, it was such a good deal that I treated myself to dessert - a delicious Flan made of custard with caramel sauce and a dab of whipped cream and raspberry sauce.
While I was enjoying my meal, I noticed many impressive charcoal drawings with varying Mexican themes hanging on the walls. The artist had backed the drawings with rough and jagged plywood, which not only complements the beauty of the drawings, but also gives Jalapenos an authentic feel. The large windows looking out onto the small beer garden, the bay, and Lummi Island add to the comfortable and friendly atmosphere.
All in all, Jalapenos is an ideal place to enjoy high quality Mexican cuisine in a friendly place without breaking the bank.

Jalapenos is the most amazing place to have mexi in Bellingham. The "Big Mama" margaritas are amazing and the carne asada is muy bueno!

Jalapenos has the friendliest, most knowledgeable staff of any restaurant in Bellingham. Big Mama's and mini burritos are pure comfort food. They treat customers as family - even better. Authentic mexican sauces and a good deal! Thanks!!!

My favorite is arroz con camarones (rice with shrimp). The serving is large, with more than enough shrimp. But the heart of the meal is the sauce or salsa, which has just enough touch of fire to make it Mexican. It goes way beyond anything I have ever encountered in Mexican food before, in terms of combining interesting and pleasing flavors. Rather than the usual “burn enough to make you sweat” style, it is more like French cuisine in subtleness and complexity, but it would never be mistaken for French.

We frickin love Jalapenos!! The food is AMAZING! And you get as much chips and salsa as you want! But if you get a box to bring home your leftovers, don't leave it on the sidewalk while you play in the park, cuz someone will steal it! I know!!

The very best Chili Rellanos I ever had were at Jalapeno's with the verde sauce... They were large and full of chili flavor... not the breading that some places put on them...
I also loved the tri color chips and fresh salsa...

After reading your comments about Jalapeno's I went buy to check it out. The food was great much better than I expected. The only thing that did not set well was the glass of water. The chemical taste was a downer. This could be improved by installing a chemical removal filter on Jalapeno's drinking water. Also it would improve the taste of the water by putting a slice of lemon in each glass of water. This may sound like I am nit picking -- but it is the attention to little things that make the meal great.
I am happy to find a Mexican restaurant that serves an excellant meal. Walt McCullough
