Old Town sprawls at the bottom of the cliff below downtown on the thin strip of land that was driftwood beach before construction of the old Roeder sawmill and the development of the city. A fish hatchery and park is the central feature of this neighborhood, nestled along the mouth of Whatcom Creek where it drains into the bay. Old Town is also one of the few places where the streets run along the saltwater, albeit socked in by the wharves of Georgia Pacific West Inc. Although the geographical definition of Old Town may be a bit vague, there is nothing uncertain about its character. Shipyards, Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad and the proximity of marinas bring a hardy mix of seafaring and blue collar characters to the make-up of Old Town. This is an area defined by the working class, marine heritage of the city -- far removed from the college atmosphere of Sehome Hill or the Bohemian feel of Fairhaven.
