On Samish Way's "restaurant strip", just north of Bill McDonald Parkway. Description: Bellingham seems to be able to support an impressive assortment of Thai Food eateries, from the solid-but-low-brow student stand by, to the well-decorated-for-the-well-heeled sort of place. On Rice belongs to the latter category. In fact, you may find yourself pleasantly distracted by how lovely the place looks. From the crystal-clean fish tank that greets your eyes the moment you step in the door, to the warm colors and thoughtful, low-key decoration, On Rice somehow manages to make you feel full and cozy before you even glance at a menu. Once you look at a menu, you’ll find plenty to occupy your attention. On Rice has an extensive range of offerings. Familiar favorites like Swimming Rama and Phad Thai are there, along with less common dishes like the "Mother of Pearl" (garlic prawns with fresh asparagus) and the "Floating Wrap" (fresh seafood dumpling, deep fried and served with a green curry sauce). If you happen to be there for a quick lunch, you’ll find a streamlined lunch menu, which makes it easy to decide and order in a hurry. The service at On Rice is gracious and attentive, and I appreciated the little extras that the restaurant offers -- the little things they’ve thought of to make the overall dining experience more pleasant. For instance, if you order tea you’ll find that they have a loose-leaf selection, and it’s served in a plunger pot (which, in case you’re not a regular tea drinker, makes for a nicely brewed cup of tea, without leaves in your cup). If you’re not particular about your tea, but are about your rice, you’ll have three from which to choose: jasmine, brown or sticky.
