Description:
The ferry boat MV Plover plies the narrow inlet between the Blaine Marina and the end of Semiahmoo spit. Built in 1944 to carry workmen from Blaine to the salmon cannery on Semiahmoo, it was restored by volunteers of the Whatcom Maritime Historical Society, The Friends of the Plover, and The Plover Beach Gang. Like the bird it’s named after, the Plover is small and seldom far from shore. Crafted of fir and cedar, it measures 32 feet long and less than 10 ft wide, yet weighs over 11 tons. The Plover is the oldest foot passenger ferry in the State and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The vessel is Coast Guard rated to carry 17 passengers, but bicyclists, strollers, and even well-behaved dogs may also come aboard when there is room. The two-person crew provides interesting commentary on the Plover’s restoration and the many diverse sights along the short crossing. Sights which may include British Columbia's Coast Mountains, basking seals, soaring eagles, stalking herons, and maybe even a shipwreck. The Plover also provides a pleasant shortcut for cyclists pedaling the coast. The Plover also makes a great water taxi from Blaine to a midday meal at the Semiahmoo resort.
Throughout the summer, the Plover operates during on the following days: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 4th of July, weekday holidays, as well as for special charters. Departure times are on the hour from Blaine Visitor’s Dock and on the half-hour from the wharf at the Inn at Semiahmoo. The Plover boasts the shortest ferry route in the State with crossing times of 11 minutes from Blaine Marina to Semiahmoo, and 23 minutes on the return. Passengers and cycles are boarded free as space allows, but donations make the ferry possible. So whether you want a closer look at diving eagles, a shortcut around Drayton Harbor, or a trip into history, take a ride on the Plover.
