Description:
The Lynden Community/Senior Center's motto is "we are in the people business."

A typical day at the center might include: exercise class, the Looney Toon Kitchen band practice, a nutritional lunch, bridge; Bocce Ball; hymn singing or a City Council Meeting, such is the diversity of activities you might find happening at the Lynden Community/Senior Center on any given day.

Located in downtown Lynden, this red brick building was once a grocery store. It was purchased in 1991 with funding from the city, the Lynden Council on Aging, and Whatcom County Parks. It was turned into a multi-purpose facility that provides a wide range of services and recreational activities for Seniors and the Community alike.

During the day, the Center is primarily used by Seniors. If you look up on their schedule board as you enter the building, you will find that each day is packed with activities like the ones shown above. The center has approx. 500-600 members. Lunch is served 6 days a week for approximately 75-80 people. Anyone 60 or over may come for lunch, a donation is recommended. The main room with stage is primarily used for lunches, band practice, organization meetings, and scheduled entertainment. There is also a pool room with four pool tables. I hear from Bob Long, the Center's manager, that ladies pool on Mondays has become quite popular. In addition there is a crafts and exercise room, a TV room/lounge, gift shop, card room for bridge and pinochle, and a health room.

In the evenings, the Center is open for community use such as town council and county meetings. Several local Bellingham businesses meet there regularly, including the Whatcom Transit Authority and Haggen. Various religious denominations have also used the Center for services. As Bob says "almost anything goes." Local groups needing practice, performance, or meeting space should feel free to get in touch with him to obtain more information about scheduling space.

With such a diversity of services and activities, I can safely say that the Lynden Community/Senior Center definitely lives up to its motto.
