Description:
A short ramble off I-5 with the Cascades at your nose and Canadian peaks off your shoulder, will bring you to the spruce Dutch community of Lynden. Mt. Baker looms so large there, the town’s Little Leaguers could surely smack one right over it’s frosty tip. And if you’re very lucky, you’re heading for the Lynden Dutch Bakery where an unbearably alluring array of home baked cakes, pies, cookies and rolls await you.

This is a ‘Destination’ bakery where "What’s Good Today?" is a ludicrous question. These baked goods are folk art where the press of the hand lends signature to the piece and the flavors are flawlessly perfect. Chocolate caramel pie. Cinnamon sticky rolls. Something so simple as a Raisin Bun is perfection. This bakery serves soups and sandwiches as well and you’ll find those offerings equally memorable; whomping "Dutch" subs and a medley of soups (pea soup daily!).

The bakery does $15,000 a week in business, with much of the sales in coffee and its most popular item, ‘Krenten Bolles’, those perfect Raisin Buns. Doors open at 5:00 am, a suitable hour for the local dairy farmers whose milking day begins at 4:30. Bakery staff, in floral dresses with white laced aprons and hats attend to the bustle, flinging their native Dutch tongue about in good natured sass and humor. A playful spirit prevails here with the available pie flavors grouped by frequency: ‘Always’ (Dutch Apple, Bumble Berry, Strawberry Rhubarb and Chocolate Caramel), ‘Sometimes’, and ‘Never Again’ (Pickle).

At the Lynden Dutch Bakery, it’s the sign over the counter that expresses it best: "There’s no place like this place anywhere near this place so this must be the place!" Enter into the calories with wild abandon, as maybe, just maybe, this is how life is best lived.
