Description:
The Sidewalk Cafe is not on a sidewalk, as one might expect, but instead sits inside Lynden’s Dutch Village Mall. Even so, the cafe’s decor certainly gives the impression of outdoor sidewalk dining. Patio tables and sun umbrellas speckle the cafe’s floor space; many are placed conveniently alongside the indoor canal, allowing customers to watch the swimming fish while enjoying their meal. For those that prefer people-watching, gift shops and galleries are located across from the cafe for buyers and window-shoppers to wander through.

The sign at the Sidewalk Cafe boasts “good home cooking.” This claim is easily tested with the first bite of thickly sliced soft bread used for sandwiches such as turkey and cream cheese, roast beef, ham and cheese, vegetarian, and the like. Sandwiches come in half or whole sizes (look for daily specials), and each is served with the customer’s choice of soup, french fries, potato salad, or a garden salad. In addition to the cold deli sandwiches, the cafe offers a selection of salads, including taco salad, caesar salad, and an oriental salad, and some hot dishes as well. Fat scones and cookies tempt from behind the glass case-- a perfect snack with a cup of hot espresso. The cafe also has a breakfast menu available for early-morning customers, which offers selections ranging from egg, sausage, and toast combinations to Belgian waffles and pancakes.

Lynden’s Dutch Village Mall displays this town’s fervor for its rich Dutch heritage. The Sidewalk Cafe fits in well with the setting, and its quiet, conservative feel provides a nice break for shoppers anticipating a good deli sandwich, some hot soup, or a simple cup of coffee. Those visiting the mall should make this restaurant a regular stop, whether it is their first visit, or their fiftieth.
