The center is located near mile post 120 on the North Cascades Highway (Hwy 20) just west of Newhalem townsite. Description: The Visitor Center is about the closest you can drive to the heart of the North Cascades. You’ll find pleasant nature walks, historical sites, interpretive signs, camping, scenic views, and informative rangers. Stop in the center during the day and browse the many displays, enjoy a short theater program, and go see the view that gives Pinnacle Peak its’ nickname "The Chopping Block." Take a self-guided tour on the "To Know A Tree Trail." You’ll learn tree identification and habitat, some of the Native American uses, and even which trees contain a cancer cure. The "Rock Shelter" is a reconstructed campsite used by Native People 1400 years ago, illustrating the rich archeological value of the park. The "Historic Walk of Newhalem" lets you visit a company town originally built for the employees of the power generating station. A tour of the Gorge and Powerhouse is interesting for both the scenery and the technology. Within short driving distance are many popular campgrounds and trails. Enjoy the roadside interpretive signs and views of lakes and dams. For hikers there are waterfalls in forested canyons, open river valleys and historic mining areas. Other nearby trailheads mark the entry into some of the most remote and difficult wilderness in the US. Seasonal programs and weekday hours reflect the spring opening of the North Cascades Highway. They include daily ranger talks, children’s programs, Earth Week in April and International Migratory Bird Week in May. So whether your driving through, need an excuse to stretch your legs, or planning a longer stay, take some time to enjoy this pleasant and informative area. Written By: Bud Hardwick In This Category
